Wolfsburg shock Leverkusen - Sargent and Werder goalless against Gladbach
Many US men's national team fans were hopeful to see the Bundesliga debut of young Ulysses Llanez on Tuesday. The winger made the matchday squad but did not come off the bench in Wolfsburg's surprise 4-1 victory on the road against Bayer Leverkusen.
An open affair for much of the first half, it took until the 43rd minute for either team to find a goal. Marin Pongracic opened the scoring with a header following a freekick by Maximilian Arnold.
The narrow lead led to a major beating inflicted by the Wolves on the Werkself. In the 64th minute, Arnold doubled the lead for Wolfsburg, and just four minutes later, Renato Steffen made it 3-0. Then in the 75th minute, Pongracic scored his second to make it 4-0.
Julian Baumgartlinger made it 4-1 with five minutes to go. But the goal came too late to have an impact on the overall score.
Josh Sargent starts for Werder - Frankfurt come from behind to pick up point
Werder Bremen, with Josh Sargent in the starting lineup, picked up a much-needed point against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the relegation battle. But die Werderaner had countless chances and will feel that they have missed an opportunity to make a step towards safety.
Over in Frankfurt, Eintracht Frankfurt managed a sensational comeback against SC Freiburg. The Eagles were down 3-1 after 69 minutes. Vincenzo Grifo (28'), Nils Petersen (67') and Lucas Höler (69') scored for Freiburg—André Silva scored for Frankfurt (35').
Then in the 79th minute, Daichi Kamada halved the lead. American Timothy Chandler then completed the comeback in the 82nd minute, picking up an important point for Frankfurt.
