John Anthony Brooks on the market? - Wolfsburg looking for new defender
VfL Wolfsburg are reportedly unhappy with US men's national team defender John Anthony Brooks. The 27-year-old joined die Wölfe in 2017 from Hertha Berlin in what is to this day a club record fee of €17 million. The defender, however, has never met the high expectations that came with the high transfer fee.
This season Brooks managed 25 appearances and at one point lost his position in the starting XI. Over the last two seasons, Wolfsburg conceded 96 goals, too many to break into the top four of the Bundesliga. "In the last few games, we conceded too many goals," head coach Oliver Glasner told the German magazine kicker in their Monday print edition.
As a result of the many goals, the club signed Marin Pongracic from Red Bull Salzburg in the winter. The 22-year-old has not always been without mistakes but due to his age is still considered a talent. The same cannot be said about Brooks. The club would, therefore, like to bring in a new defender to strengthen the backline.
"We would like to see less than 40 goals against next season," Glasner said. But to achieve that the club needs further quality. Signing new players in times of corona is, however, difficult. Wolfsburg would have to first generate income, perhaps by selling Brooks? Selling Brooks could be difficult, however. The 27-year-old earns good money in Wolfsburg and is under contract until 2022. Furthermore, the market for Brooks will be limited.
